Ganesh Chaturthi Special Pistachio Modaks

Ganesha Chaturthi is the Hindu festival celebrated on the birthday (rebirth) of LordGanesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati. Ganesha is widely worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune and traditionally invoked at the beginning of any new venture or at the start of travel. Today I am sharing with you special sweets for this festival Modaks. Modaks have a special importance in the worship of Ganesh; modak is believed to be his favorite food, which begets him the moniker modakapriya (the one who likes modak) in Sanskrit. During the Ganesh worship ceremony, known in India asGanesh Chaturthi the puja always concludes with an offering of twenty one modaks to the deity and as prasad. In my part Ganeshji’s puja is done with ladoo’s but for the first time I try my hand on modaks, the shape is not picture perfect but I must say it is yummylicious. I use pista for the outer covering just to give a nutty crunchy filling. It goes well. Hope you all like this little twist in regular modak.

Preparation time 15 minutes
Cooking time 30 to 40 minutes
Serves 4

Ingredients:
For the outer cover
1 cup rice flour
1 tsp ghee
1 cup water
a pinch of salt
¼ cup chopped pistachio
For the filling
1 ½ cup s shrdded coconut
½ tsp cardamom powder
1 tsp roasted poppy seed
1 tsp roasted sesame seed
1 cup sugar / jaggery (gur)

Methods Of Cooking:
First make the filling. Though it is traditionally make by jaggery but I used sugar. Mix coconut and sugar on medium heat. Stir continuously until it is well mixed. Then add cardamom powder and the roasted poppy and sesame seed. Mix well. Filling is ready. Remove from heat and allow it to cool. For the outer cover of the modak, boil 1 cup water and when it comes to boil add ghee, salt and rice flour and stir quickly so as to remove all lumps. Stir again and again. Make sure the dough should not be too dry or sticky. Now remove from pan from heat. Add chopped pistachio. Now knead it while hot. Divide this dough into small balls. Grease the palm with little oil. Take a ball of dough to from cup shape. Place about teaspoon coconut filling. Dip thumb and index finger in oil and make 5 to 6 small pinches side by side on the outside edges of the cup. Bring them together on top and join together on top and joint to form a peak. This should look like a whole garlic pod. But I must say my is not perfect in shape as I told that this my first time. But with little practice you can make perfect. Now put your modaks in a steamer and steam for about 15 minutes. Make Ganesha happy.

Happy Ganesh Chathurthi to all !

Happy Cooking!
